§.9 Uses
In speaking of the uses to which this work may be found
applicable, of the good effects which may ultimately be found
producible and produced by it, mention must not be altogether
omitted of the limitations to which by the nature
of man, all such its usefulness is irremediably unavoidable throughout subjected.+ Against
sinister interest it is not possible that in any direct
way it should operate with any force degree of efficiency in any breast which
it finds thus occupied. Against sinister interest it will
have no more direct not in any direct way have any more effect than a syllogism in the character
of an instrument of attack, in a reaction or a
countersnarp, or in the character of an instrument of defence,
against a cannon-ball.

If against In so far Against sinister interest, in
so far as it can be productive of any effect, it must will be
in the first instance, upon persons other than those
in whose breasts the irresistible influence is regarded as operating,
and thus in the next thus and in the last instance, through them those others upon
the thus preoccupied breast: upon the sinistrously
person, by those third persons, by forewarning and
them of and preparing them against all such argument
as those to which that instrument of delusive error and misconduct
can give rise, to the sinistrously interested person himself to him whose mind is the seat of it,
by giving him a view of the resistance which he may
expect at their hands in virtue by means of the warning which they
will have received.
