Fallacies Ch. Classification

9

Allotting to [the expression of] those groupes of fallacies which
[appear seem to] apply themselves to respectively to the jud
imagination and the judgment the classical appellation
of arguments ad imaginationem and arguments
ad judicium, the following are the appellations denominations that
have presented themselves as capable applicable of serving
to characterize and distinguish the condivident component groupes into
that may be formed by this subdivision of the inordinately
ample class the component elements of which the would on the same plan principle
of denomination be termed arguments ad affectus.

17
Names of the orders
of fallacies in the
above plan: — with
subdivision of Order 1.
I. Arguments ad affectus
II. ad imaginationem
III. — ad judicium.

Arguments 1. ad vericundiam 2 ad quietem
3 ad socordium 4 ad rectum sen timeram 5 ad superstitionum
6 — ad invidentiam 6 ad superbiam 7 ad odium 8 ad amicitium
9 ad invidentiam

Division of Order I
1 — ad vericundiam
2. ad quietem
3. ad socordium
4. — ad rectum
5. — ad superstitionum
6 — ad superbiam
7. — ad odium
8 — ad amicitium
9 — ad invidentiam

In the arrangement distribution thus made imperfections
will be found the removal of which, should the removal
of them be found practicable and at the same time
worth the trouble, must be left to some experter hand.
The denominations themselves not in every instant sufficiently
distinct from each other: the articles ranged under
them respectively not appertaining with a degree of propriety sufficiently exclusive to the heads under
which they are placed — To these objections
not to mention others no satisfactory answer answer that appeared has been found.

18
Imperfections of
this arrangement
1. denomination not
sufficiently distinct
2. G, not properly
appertaining to their
divisions — &c

Imperfect as it is, the arrangement [it is hoped] will
still it is hoped be found by the reflecting thinking reader be found to be not altogether without
its use

19
Notwithstanding this
the classification will
be found better than
none, and is the least
imperfect J.B. could make
To mend it or make a
better is left for some experter hand.
