Fallacies
Generalia
§ Arrangement
2 2
Arrangement which has for its source the consideration
of that the quarter of the mind to which to which in the mind of the hearer or reader the fallacy exclusively
or more particularly applies itself, namely in the first place
whether it be the judgment, the aff imagination or the affections
the affections the imagination or the judgment.
Any division drawn from this source can not but be seen to be in
a very considerable degree an indeterminate one: especially if when it
is considered that all these fictitious entities are each of them
part and parcel of the same fictitious whole, having all of them every one
their seat in the same place, and so in such sort connected that no object
can present itself to any one without presenting itself to the others
at the same time.
At the same time so vast extensive is the field, that for enabling the
mind to obtain any tolerably satisfactory command over it, a
set of divisions, [framed upon some principle or other] deduced
from some source or other presented itself as an altogether a help to the inm
implement altogether indispensable, as a help support an instrument without
which the mind of the reader might find repelled by the
apprehension of intolerable fatigue.
The one which will have be seen employed, is that
which has pres happened to present suggest itself to the author as
presenting labouring under fewer imperfections than any other he could think
of: to apply contrive frame amendments, or to substitute to the whole a
different and less inconvenient arrangement is an operation
that might afford amusement to an intelligent and industrious
mind.
