Generalia
§ Purposes or designs by which fallacies may be uttered.
1. Producing the error in the mind of the persons by whom communication
is received of the discourse.
2. Producing in the minds of those to whom communication
is made of the discourse, the conception true of false, that by
the utterer himself, the erroneous opinion is entertained.
For this purpose use made of a short phrase or having
in the way of allusion only without direct or any thing like complete
statement the effect of conveying the intimation in question.
Use made of such a phrase in the character of a common
implement — employed by a party in common to serve
as a cover for their reputation against attacks made on it in
the shape of argument.
