Ch. Authority

10

§ Lawyers interest

It is then from the interest of this and every man of law that
so far as concerns matter of law mens conception of right and wrong should be as
confused, as contradictory, as unsettled, and in his
hands as pliant [and obsequious] as possible:

19
— hence, that
the whole field of
mens opinions of right
and wrong be as
contradictory,
thence as obsequious
to him as possible.
In particular —

1 that thus the same wickedness which if committed
by, and for the benefit of any other man would be followed
by shame and punishment, should be when
committed by him and for his benefit be followed matter
not only of permission, but obligation, committed by
him
be followed not by shame as punishment,
but by honour and reward.

20 or 2
1. That the s c
which to others would
produce shame and
punishment, should to him
and his produce h
and reward.

2. that thus again on condition of telling a lie it should be in
his power to do any thing that he chose: that
seeing him whatsoever injustice it might
suit him to committ on this false pretence, the
injustice and the falshood should by them be regarded
with equal and complacency and unabated
reverence.

21 or 4
2. that as
telling a lie it be in
his power to do what
he pleases: the injustice
and falshood being regarded
with complacency and
reverence.

3. that thus again, as often as to put money
into his own pocket or for advantage to himself or his associates in
any other shape it should suit his purpose that
falshood should be committed employed, and that accordingly
in the event of its being committed employed by the this or that
person person in question, if it should happen to him to hold
himself, and to be known to
he should hold himself, in readiness
to bestow follow such reward upon such person, such reward
should merely because bestowed by him be regarded as
properly bestowed: and then moreover if in the event of its a
falshood not being committed employed by the person in question, he should
hold
hold himself in readiness
to
apply
punishment to that
purpose, such
punishment should
merely because applied
by him be
regarded as properly
applied.

22 or 5
that as often as,
falshood
for making an advantage
in any other shape,
will be produced to him,
it be regarded as proper
for him to employ reward
or punishment
for the p
of such falshood.
