§.4. Examples
3 Medical men
1 1
☞ Quere whether to insert this example?
One use of government is to enable those who have share
in it to employ apply public money in the paying for payment for
private service
Like the lawyer as well as the professional man
of every other class, the medical man—even the medical
man is not altogether without his sinister interest: but of
sinister interest in this case no such public insincerity
as in the case of the lawyer is the fruit.
1. It is the interest of the medical man of every class
and in some cases even of the patient himself, that
hope the comfort of hope should not always be cut
off when the disease is beyond the reach of cure.
It is the interest in some circumstances of the interest both of physicians
of the medical man in all his forms, unless though
accoucheur be an exception general physician, surgeon's apothecary,
physician or surgeon whose special name ends
in ist (Quære quod exiit in ist sive græcum sive latinum)
that indisposition lying within the reach of cure remedy should
not receive experience a too hasty one
It is the real interest of the apothecary that
the bowels of the patient should not be parched for
want of irrigation: and whatsoever is the interest of
the apothecary is the interest of the physician, unless
where in a peculiarly favourable soil, probity
has reared its head and grown out of independence.
It is the inter in a word bating the accidents the interest
of all these children of Æsculapius to extend each of them for
the benefit of himself and brethren
of evacuation from the blood and bowels of the patient to his purse.

III. Medical men
with reference
to authority.
Though this as well
as other professions
has its sinister interest,
there are no
considerable fallacies
to which it stands
engaged in that
to give currency:
thence by its authority
no considerable practice.
[☞ Two pages of
detail expository
of this sinister interest
omitted.]
