inquiry is the distinction
elsewhere noticed
between self-formed
judgment and derivative

from authority —
from intellectual
authority.
On several other occasions (a), the distinctive
in the character of a distinction of primary importance, the
distinction between a self-formed and a derivative judgment
has been brought to view. Authority, in the
sense in which upon this occasion the word is employed,
is the basis upon which a derivative judgment is formed.

distinction, on it depends
the preeminence
of democratic
government:
also its possibility
for any continuance
Important indeed is this distinction: for upon it
depends not only the preeminence of democratic above every
other form of government, but, upon a scale of any considerable
extent, especially if for any considerable length of time, the possibility
of its existence.
