If the observations have any are correct truth in them, and just
Whether the subject be legislation at large, or
legislation in matters of religion, it suffices us therefore
to us who are living Ao 1820 to know of any
set of propositions that they were penned in Ao 1629, to be assured
that morally speaking there could not have possibly have been so much
wisdom in them as there would be have been in a set of
propositions on the same subjects, if penned Ao 1810
sinister interest having no share in the penning composition in
either case.
And whatever attempts exertions endeavours by the influence of well
over will used to engage men to ascribe to
any such propositions the attribute of perpetually or
even actually superior wisdom, whatsoever these propositions
are we may equally assured that such endeavours
as they can have nothing but folly or insincerity
for their effect, so they can have had nothing
but sinister interest for their cause
