This device an improvement
on Posterity-chainers
Instrument of fallacy an
Oath. You being
King, to any arrangement
to which you wish to bind
subjects and successors
for ever add an Oath
to that effect, they are
if weak enough, bound
however mischievous the
effect. Thus tyranny to
any extent may be
perpetual.

§.1. Exposition. (Ao 1810.)

This device, as already intimated of the nature of which an intimation has been already
given is a sort of improvement upon the last foregoing
one.

At the time of taking an engagement, acting a part in a ceremony
called the ceremony of an oath, is an operation
that accompanies it.

Whatsoever might be done or not be done by the an
engagement without the oath, superadd employ the ceremony
of an oath, and you may in the way above
described, if you are a King at least and a King of England,+
or of Great Britain,
or of Great Britain and
Ireland

described you may exercise over posterity, if posterity
be weak enough to suffer you so you have but present time what sort and
degree of tyranny you please.

You having settled
with yourself what
arrangements you
are most afraid of
hearing the people call
upon you to utter,
Archbishop asks you
whether you will keep
them for ever? You
kiss the book and say
you I promise to.

For this purpose you must provide a book
and this which book must be called the holy Gospels
This done you must consider with yourself whether
there be any thing which it would be at all times agreeable
to do, and at the same time agreeable to you to think of
as being likely to be done by your successors

Thereupon Moreover you provide a man called an Archbishop
or a Bishop to state to you one after another the several
things which it would thus be agreeable to d you to do saying
to you before each will you solemnly promise and swear
to do so and so mentioning it. Your answer is — All I solemnly
this I promise so to do or I solemnly will: or All this I
promise to do: take observing at the mention of the last thing
so say laying your hand upon the aforesaid Holy Gospels, [+] The

have here before promised
I will perform
and keep. So help me
God: and then you kiss
the book.
