Fallacies
Ch. Posterity
§.2. Exposure
5
To continue the argument in a congenial correspondent strain of
absurdity, it might be observed the one observation might be added, that upon the principle
of indemnity or compensation, in proportion as
a legislator finds his hands thus tied up and his
power curtailed by the operations of preceding legislators his predecessors
he m to make himself amends he ought to possess
be considered as possessing and accordingly to exercise
the right of tying up in the same manner the hands
in relation to over an equal space in the field of law the
hands of his successors.
And This scheme of justice and policy would agrees exactly
with that which has so lately been adopted and acted upon
by the defender of reversionary grants. Present King A to
obtain one grain of power to himself plunders future King
B of two grains of that which should have been his.
For the injury thus done him by King A, King B,
when he comes to be King revenges himself in like manner upon future King C:
and in this strain string of injuries and vengeances the
scheme of justice and policy goes on till the whole
of the matter of power whatever it be has been exhausted.
The same sort of man that defends the one of
these two abuses immutable laws and reversionary grants is framed to defend the other: accordingly
the same individual would be found, it is
believed, if the documents were searched, busy in the defence of both.
