Happiness the only
rational end:— Engagement
but a means
to that end
In the eyes of every rational sensitive being, happiness (need it be said?) is the
only ultimate end — the only universal and ultimate end.
A contract in engagement of any kind is but a means,
and that but one means amongst many employed for and towards the attainment
of that end.

So far as by Whereas by non- observance
more happiness will
be produced than by
observance, non-observance is a duty
to insist thereupon insisting on observance
is if by one party
improbity, if by both
weakness.
So far as by the observance of the engagement — the interest of both
parties — and where those more than two are concerned that of
all parties being taken into the account more happiness
is produced than by the non-observance of it, it ought
to be observed, and to seek to avoid escape from the observance of
it would in any of the parties be improbity.
But so far as by the non-observance of it, the
same interests being still considered and to the same all comprehensive extent more happiness would
be produced than by the observance, it ought not to be
observed: to insist on the observance of it would if on
the part of one party alone be improbity or weakness, if on the part of
all of them, weakness.

With dangerousness
this doctrine can not
be charged without a
contradiction in terms
In this doctrine, so long as it is understood according
to its true meaning there never can be any thing mischievous
or dangerous: and for so it is that so long as
it is thus understood, to charge it with
being in any respect dangerous is to utter advance a contradiction
in terms. it is as much as to say it is prejudicial
to human happiness, to have regard to human happiness.
The only way to make sure of producing on every occasion the
greatest quantity of such happiness is to abstain from indem not to aim at any such thing: to pay utter no regard to it, or
where by such or such
a course of conduct more happiness is producible than by the contrary course, to pursue the contrary course in preference.
