Fallacies

Ch. Cloud Climbers
§.1. Exposition and
Exposure

2

2
Under this less
apposite name those
whose wish it is
to defend the pernicious
object will
thus obtain means
of doing so without
exposing themselves
to shame.

Those persons A man at any rate who by interest or prejudice
are disposed either to think or to speak favourably of
the object which you have to defend support will take advantage
of the ambiguity: if not pressed they left to themselves himself, he will
comprehend in their within the circles compass of their his approbation the indefensible illaudable object and
the defensible laudable one, viz. the m laudable or at least
indifferent object together: pressed by the distinction, if
should it ever happen to him to receive notice
of the distinction, and to be hard pressed by it, then indeed it is he may
perhaps find indeed that it may happen to him to feel find the necessity of confining his approbation
to the laudable m or indifferent object, and give up
the illaudable one.

3
Though on being
pressed they may
find themselves under
the necessity of recognizing
the distinction,
thus confining their
approbation to the
innocuous object, and
giving up for the
moment the noxious
one, yet when the
pressure is removed
they will return to
the conveniently
ambiguous generic
term under which
the defence indispensable
due to the innoxious
object may be extended
to the noxious one.

But so long as the distinction has never
yet been held holden up to view, or and even afterwards
as often as the person he has to deal with appears
not to be aware of it, the man by whom or upon
whom the device is practised employed, may find himself
at liberty to give the support of his voice to the
object which if presented under its peculiar
name he would not venture to seem to approve.
