1 Purpose. 2 Object or Subject
1. As to the purpose, it may be applied (this instrument)
to the purpose of aggression hostility, or to the purpose of
defence. amity. applied to the
2. As to the person, it may be applied to the individual
who applies it or to another or others: if, on consideration
of an attack subsisting or apprehended, then it is to the purpose of
defence, if to it be the case of the individual himself, to the
purpose of self-defence.
3 As to the object or subject, it may be applied
either to a person or to a thing; if to a thing, to a thing
really existing, to a fictitious entity: that class of entities of
to which the names are so abundant, and of which we shall
presently see examples.
4. Applied to a thing of either class, it is applied
to all such persons in general by whom any between whom and
that thing a relation of any kind has place.
