§.1. Exposition
4
Take for example the terms appellatives 1. Influence. 2. Order.
3. Forms. Under all these abuse in every shape — misrule
in all its forms every shape are in possession of finding the
shelter of which they stand so much in need. By
any such cry as Oh Excellent Influence! or What an excellent
thing is influence!; Oh Excellent order! or What an excellent
thing is order! Oh excellent forms! or What excellent
things are forms! no great favour promises to be obtainable:
still less any efficient means of for rendering the adversary
odious, or rendering odious the man whose exertions
are employed on the other side. Still however there is a
something an appellative which which it is capable of bringing
to view that which is desired brings to view at the
same time an object, of which speaking in the aggregate
it can not, with propriety, in the eyes of any one be said, that
it ought not to have existence. No one can take upon
him to say — there ought not to exist any such thing
as influence — there ought not to exist any such thing
as order, or there ought not to exist any such things
as forms. Well then what you are complaining of, and
inveighing against is influence — or it is maintenance of
order — or it is done according to form — or it is
itself a form.
