Logical High-fliers
&c fallacy.
Most extensive description
— For causing to
be regarded as belonging
to an object properties
not belonging to it:
take the name of a
class by which together
with this object are
designated others
possessed of the above
properties.
Ch. 1. Logical High-fliers, or Logical cloud-climbers,
or Lumping Classifiers, or Distinction excluders, or
Distinction-eluders fallacy
Considered in the most extensive point of view f of which
it is susceptible capable of being considered the receipt direction for the composition fashioning of
this fallacy may be thus expressed.
If your purpose object is to predicate concerning cause men to regard a
the object in question cause men to regard as belonging
to the object class of objects in question some property which does not
belong to it, look out for some more extensive class
of objects in which along with the object in question
are is contained some object or objects to which the property
in question is generally understood to belong, and instead
of its narrower and distinctive appropriate, characteristic name, speak of it by
its such more ample its unappropriate, uncharacteristic less appropriate, less characteristic
undistinctive name: [by this means if in so far as the impropriety
escapes observation, under cover of this name along with and in the properties which do
belong with it, you may succeed in your endeavour to
cause men to consider as belong to it, the quality
which though not belonging to it, it is your desire
and endeavour to cause them to regard as belonging
to it.]
