Fallacies

ulto
Ch. Logical High-fliers
§.1. Exposition

2

2
Sufficient for
exemplifying the
use of this fallacy
will be the propert
distinction between
good and bad properties:
to which
corresponds that between
eulogistic and
dyslogistic appellatives

For the purpose of rendering clear the nature and
sinister fallacious deceptious use of this fallacy device, it will not be necessary to
descend into any particular exemplification of
specific qualities: the qualities expressed by the general
adjuncts terms good and bad — terms by which the sort of
sensation excited in the breast by which the object is contemplated,
namely agreeable and accordingly approbative, or disagreeable
and accordingly disapprobative — will suffice.

3.
Of this, as of all
other fallacies of
the Ins, main purpose
reconciling
men to arrangements
by which universal
interest is sacrificed
to ruler's do: for
those by which universal
interest is
preferred need no
fallacy for support.

Of this fallacy, as of all other fallacious deceptious devices,
the propensity to use of which is attached to the situation of the Ins
considered as such — the general object will accordingly be
the reconciling of mens minds to whats all such arrangements
as being prejudicial hostile to the universal interest
are at the same time notwithstanding beneficial subservient conducive to the particular
interest of their particular class in question: among those to such
among those which are beneficial to that particular interest,
to such and such alone only as are hostile to the universal
interest: for as to those which are beneficial to
the universal particular without being hostile to the
universal interest, for the causing these to be regarded as
beneficial to the universal interest, neither in this nor
in any other shape will there be any need of fallacy.
