Fallacies
Ch. Opposer Generals
3
By The use of distinctness and even oppositeness presented to view
as having place between objects so intimately connected
as measures and men or the measures in question and the
men whose measures they are — by the air colour of paradox thus
given to the position which by the ostentation of pretension to superior
acuteness and sagacity an interest excitement is given to
a superficial eye glance observer, a ground of suspicion is presented to
the view of him [+] in whose eyes [+] 2
[+] 2 whose which his object and endeavour
on on all occasions
to deceive that course
of thought and action
which is in the highest
degree beneficial to
the universal interest
the profit of right conception
in on matters of importance affords adequate payment
for the trouble.
The men in question — on what account in to the eyes of the community at large are they fit
objects of regard [to the community at large] other except than on
account of the measures which they pursue advocate or intend to
pursue? advocate? By what means are by from what evidence is any
judgment to be formed of concerning their distinctive characters other than except from
the measures which they advocate? measures be given to Till then question
to attack the men is to attack their measures: to attack the
measures of the men is to attack the men themselves: the
men whose measures they are. to be attached to the measures
is to be attached to the men in so far as they advocate those
same measures: to be attached to the men is to be attached
to the measures by their attachment to which the attachment
to them has been produced.
