Fallacies

Note continued
I Generalia
Ch. Causes of these fallacies
§.2. Sinister interest

2

As public so private thus is not personal
must in cases of competition yield to personal

1 (a) continued
6. No action (proposed
forbearance included)
but has some
motive or motives for
its cause. Action
some motive is effect
some cause.

Note ( ) continued

6 In the operation of some motive or motives may be
seen the proximate cause of every human action that
has place: including, in so far as it is the result
of reflection, every instance inaction or forbearance. An action without
a motive would be an effect without a cause.

7. Interest co-interest
with motive; no
action of which interest
in some shape or shapes
is not the cause.

7 As Of the word interest when taken in its most extensive sense,
the signification being coextensive with that of the word
motive, so again an action that is not the result of interest —
of interest in some shape or other, would be an effect
without a cause.

8. Applied to actions
disinterestedness is
but the absence of
self-regarding interest.

8. When on any occasion a man's conduct — in respect of any
action that is ascribed to a man his conduct is
termed disinterested, if what in so far as in what is thus said there
be any thing of truth, all that can be meant by it
is that it is the result of some motive a motive
of the class of social or that of some-social, or if of that
of dissocial, of dissocial springing out of some matter
of not social or some-social class — in contradistinction
to all motives of motives belonging the self-regarding [class
of] motives
