Ch. 1. Personalities of the vituperative class; — [the badness of the measure inferred
from some circumstance trusted to as placing the person
of those who propose or support it in an unfavourable
point of view.]

Give in a note the reason why this group of fallacies, being
capable of being employed on either side is here placed among
the fallacies of the ins.

1. Allegation of
bad motives

1. Antecedent Ground Position or antecedent The authors or supporters of motives by which the authors
and supporters advocates of the measure have been engaged in the support
of it are bad, or at least not practical good motives. Consequent Conclusion is Preference or Consequent Therefore
the proposed measure is a bad one. ought to be opposed. Practical
inference — oppose the measure.

2 Allegation of bad
intention or design

2. Ground Position or antecedent. In proposing or advocating supporting the
measure, its advo proposers and advocates entertain bad
designs: having in view to ground on this measure, be it
good or bad, if it be carried, other measures which will
be pernicious beyond dispute. Inference Conclusion or Consequent, as
before

3. Allegation of
bad in the view character

3. The persons by whom the measure is supported are
some or all of them, persons of bad character — Oppose the
measure.

4. Allegation of inconsistency

4. Among the persons by whom the measure is supported
are some by whom at one time this same measure or
others some other resembling it was opposed — Oppose the measure. (a)
