But in a mixt
assembly such as that
of a British House of
Parliament the
fact is not only natural
but conformably
exemplified.
Such weakness as
by each man imputed
— not to himself
indeed but to
a great part of his
colleagues.
Whether with or
without reason, see
supra and infra
To a monarch, an argument of this complection
promises not to find many that would be disposed to use it
Yet in certain assemblies one hears it brought forward
continually, and without reserve.
Why? — Is it that by each in the case of all every such Member or
by the greater part of the Members each
thus mean contemptuous low is the opinion entertained by each one Member
of himself? Of this No: assured by the probability seems
not great, but st such is the opinion entertained
by each of the great majority of his colleagues: and whether
such opinion an opinion of this sort be altogether destitute of foundation is
a question on which the sort of reception and degree of influence which this
as well as so many other fallacies is in the habit
of experiencing exercising may afford some light.
