On this ground Propose
any thing that is being preponderantly
good with
reference to the interest
of the whole is adverse
to the interest of the
few, on this ground
this or that one of them
will prove to you that
it is execrably bad.
Why? because being
good it is a step
in the career of improvement.
Propose any thing good which being at the same time that
it is adverse to his particular particular interest is with reference
to the general interest good propose to him this good thing
and if he be ought out of hope of persuading
any body by any other means to look upon it as bad, he
will maintain to you that for the very reason that
it is so good it is execrably bad. For what is there of these deeds
or measures that are good which is these that is not a step towards
perfection? a step in some way or other to it even
so short an one? But to dare to take perfection for
your object though it be but to look at is to defile
yourself with that pestilential that atheistic heresy.
In Paradox-brandishers, Impracticability-carers, Self-contradictory
No-thinkers, and Universal Popular-corruption-pleader's
fallacies.
