Ch. 2. S
§.3. Lawyers' interest

Then to vicarious
punishment comes
a fit accompaniment
vicarious relief.
Torment in divers generations;
relief to
one: relief, take
bankruptcy relation
back, and currency
to the use of millions
by whom it was never felt.
To vicarious punishment has thus been added — its
fit well-matched accompaniment — vicarious relief. Torment having
been administered successive to generation after generation generations, relief
at length is administered to one. Such is justice, according in the
language as well as in the practice to the image formed set up of it in the mind of the
English lawyer: the relief take an act of bankruptcy
the relief relates back, and currency to the use
of the millions by whom it was never felt. (a)
