Fallacies Part 1 Ref

Ch. Paradox-brandishers

or 12 3

To to betray out of & Elector of Saxony
in Brandenburgh, to do of Hanover, .

Paradox device
1. Sole end government
when no man
is governed.
2. Grand use of a King
of England, to be enshrined.
3. Not measures but
man.

To propositions such
as these might have
been added — arbitrary
better than limited
government.

But though constantly
acted upon
this last has never
been avowed.

Not measures but man — [Hanover is as much
a part of England as Hampshire —
[ Omitt or postpone The only
endurable government is that in which nobody is
governed by any body but himself. The use of
a King of England is to be enshrined. Uniform is a bad thing Improvement is a bad thing. (a) a These Proposition maxims
which either mean as thus above or nothing, have
actually been hazarded. To these might be as well have been added
the arbitrary despotic government is better than a limited one.
But though this proposition diligently and faithfully as
this proposition sort of feeling has been acted upon and for so long a train
of years, yet some how or other, whether it no fit
vehicle for it in the state of the above having as yet been
launched contrived, it seems never yet to have been avowed
in so many words.
