§ Attachment to the constitution — different import of the terms; and affects of the
affection designated, different in different circumstances and at different periods
The interest of the community is the same, in its general
description under all circumstances and at all periods
viz. to be so governed as that the greatest happiness
of the greatest number shall constantly be produced. The constitution
may at different periods be a fit or unfit
object of attachment and in different proportions: fit
in proportion as it is subservient to the interest of the
community, unfit in proportion as it is adverse to that
same interest —
