Lett. Whig Fallacies
Not Whig measures but men
Russel &c
K
1
Not measures but men — Russel, Sidney &c
Notion of their acceptance of French money repelled as if dishonourable.
Hypocrisy of this notion.
Of the false and delusive views of human nature, in
the inculcating presenting acceptance of which the Whigs party have seen an advantage
to their party, intimation has been already given.
It is not enough for them to have had one demigod
an idol — Ch Charles Fox. To make certainty more sure
Before his apotheosis took place it was necessary for them to
have another set of idols: These a sort of continued dynasty
of idols. These they found and beheld in the persons of the Oppositionists
of the reigns of Charles the first and his two sons.
Those of the days of Charles 2d and James the 2 were
most particularly favourable to this design of theirs. Hampbden
was not so exclusively their own: on the benefit of his name
the peoplesmen might put in the claim
For the case of Sidney there was the same objection
But of all others the name of Russel most suitable to
this design has been the name of Russel. The name and family are
still in the wing — still in as high full feather as ever.
