Lett. 5. Whig Fallacies
Matchless
6
Until men's hands are cut off, such power so possessed and
as it is by the Monarch of this country the known existence
will always be an invitation to the speaking sort of potatoes
to speak what they have to say. Until the same effectual mens
be applied mens tongues be cut out that same existence
will always be an invitation to hootings and hissings. So long
as such power so possessed is then defended, as his Lordship
has thus defended it, the existence of it will be an invitation
to these same hootings and hissings: and if in the
character of arguments not much can not be said in favour
of such sounds, I see not what should hinder them from
standing upon a p with any such theories as these which
it has here been my painful task to bring to view: and are why
upon your Lordships principle that political sounds may be "repulsed"
by political sounds so as they be "vigorous", the office operation of repulsion
may not be as aptly performed by the hissing consonant and
the hooting vowel, as the attack was by such theories.
