1818 Novr. 19. B.2
Whigs and Revolution

Inducement
§2 Patriotism displayed
§.1.

3

Of the three descriptions of men under one or other of which
all men who either speak, write or think on the field of temporal politicks
may be comprehended, the Whig being the only one whose purpose
is at once served and fulfilled by it — is constantly and fully compleatly served
by it the Whig is the sort of person who on the occasion of the indication
that will here be given of the ways in which the purpose of the speaker
may be expected to be served by the allusion and professions in question
should will require to be all along kept in view.

The speaker's object being here to recommend himself to the favour
of the audience among such of the qualities of head and heart
as are adapted to the purpose those which apply more particularly
to the occasion are of course selected. On the present occasion
these are patriotism and courage fortitude: the affection of social sympathy
acting upon a scale coextensive with the purpose on the occasion;
and on the part of that generous affection a degree of
intensity sufficient to curry a man's action through the whole
field of the measures howsoever perilous that may eventually
be found to be dictated by it. By the choice thus made of the favourite
object of his endeavours the commendable qualities of
the head and the heart are at once displayed and demonstrated:
by the intensity of the affection by which those endeavours
will be supported, the amiable and respectable qualities of the
head are more particularly exemplified. To In him whom evil in
its most appalling shapes finds ready to face it with an undaunted
countenance, the matter of good, tho' it were to present itself
to him in its most fascinating shapes would should it ever present
itself in the character of matter of corruption find his pure
and adamantine breast still more assuredly insensible.
