1818 Novr. 19. B3 3
Whigs and Revolution

Inducement
§2 Patriotism displayed

4 2

Now then as to the particular character of allusion — and the professions that accompany
it or are implied in it. It will be seen how the display of
those engaging qualities is made by it.

The revolution had for its object and happily for the Country
and even for the whole human race for its result the liberation
of the Country from the yoke of a Tyrannical Despotism.
Here then on the part of all who took part in it — and not on
their part only but on the part of all others who, professing, profess
with sincerity their approbation of it the qualities of head
and heart conjoined in the virtue of patriotism. But while they
had this great and laudable result for their object the patriots
in question had not the less for their Instrument what so long as that result remained impending: that highest
and most penal or political crimes termed in ordinary language
rebellion and in Lawyers language when made up into an undiscriminating
lump, composed of things bad less bad are peccadillos
not to speak of things indifferent termed high treason
penal consequences, half hanging, emboweling alive posthumous
and quadripartite exaltation, accompanied by impoverishment
in the persons of an uncalculable multitude of descendants
and other blood relations together with a train of et ceteras
too numerous and multifarious to be on this occasion so much
as glanced at. But should occasion call for it such are the
sufferings which for the sake of his dear fellow Countrymen
in general, and in particular for that select and dearest portion of them
of which the present audience is composed, the speaker is at
all times not only ready but anxious to expose himself.
