Marking & Composition

1. A boy or girl to go over
each paper, and
stamp each advertisement
with a number
expressive of the order
in which it stands.

2. A compositor to
follow him, and stamp
each advertisement
with the Head under
which it is to be ranged
in the Judicature.

3. At this same operation,
or another, a
common mark to be
affixed to every article
of permanent concernment,
for the purpose
of their being discarded
for the present.

made in article of
permanent concernment,
between such as ought
to appear soon, and
such in respect to which the time
of insertion is a matter
of compleat indifference?
– Such as Medicines on
Sale

not come under any
of the heads contained
in the plan – to be
marked Miscellaneous
and reserved for the consideration
of the Manager.

to be afterwards affixed
to such articles as are

Composing

1.
1. Title of the Original
Paper in initials, according
to the Table to
be prefixed to each No
of the Indicator

2. In the instance of
the Town Papers, no
reference to the month
nor even the day of the
month nor day of the
week, it being understood
(according to a notice
regularly repeated) that
the day of the Paper referred
to is the day next
before the day of the appearance
of the indicator.
N.B. This holds good
only in the instance of
the articles of temporary
concernment.

3. In the instance of the
articles of permanent
concernment, as they will
come out at distinct &
uncertain times, the
month & day of the month
must be expressed. Day
of Week not necessary.

4. Quere whether the
same silence may not
be observed with regard
to the week Month & Day of
the month of the Country
Papers – as though
different in its absolute
denomination, it will
be the same in its
distance with regard to
the day of publication
of the Indicator. viz: Always the next
publishing day of the
Country Paper before
the publishing day of
the Indicator.

5. By the help of the
Stamps, different sets
of Tables may be ar
made, composed of the
same matter, and even
the same heads, but
the heads ranged in
the several orders which
they admitt of, each,
standing in its turn
occupying the first
place. This to be
pursued, as far as any particular use appears.

Make up the skeleton
with the standing
matter, viz: the
stampable heads, in
the first place: then
fill it up with the
variable matter, i:e:
the matter of detail,
respectively belonging
to those heads.

For shortness stile a
head of the first order
or rank, a 1st head:
a head of the next
subordinate order or
rank, a 2d head,
and so on.

The same stamps
that are employ'd for
marking the Newspapers
themselves,
may before each
stamp is put out
of the markers hand
serve for the composing
of the skeleton of the
Indicator itself.

Articles Particulars composing the
Skeleton as far as
concerns any particular
article. 1. Heads – 1t, 2d, 3d &c
according to the number
of the ranks of heads.
2. Abbreviations of the
names of the Papers in
which the advertisement
appears.
3. After the name
of each paper, the
No of the advertisement
in question, as marked
upon the paper.
