By the Vagrant Act

17 G.2 c.5 - "all
persons wandering abroad
and lodging in alehouses
barns, outhouses or in
the open are not giving
good account of themselves
and are persons" . . .

begging, shall be deemed
rogues and vagabonds //2


By §4 It shall be
lawful for any person to
apprehend offenders against
their will . . .


By § 7. Where any
rogues or vagabonds . . .
are brought before any
Justice, each Justice shall
inform himself by the examination
upon oath of
the person apprehended,
or any other person,
of the condition and circumstances
of the person
so apprehended, and of
the parish where he was
last legally settled . . .
and . . . shall order all
such persons so apprehended
to be publickly whipt.
. . . . or . . . to be sent
to the House of Correction
untill the next General
or Quarter Sessions. or
for any less time ...
and after each whipping
or confinement,
. . . may cause such
person to be convey'd to the

legal settlement; but
if it cannot be found,
then to the place of

By §9. When any
offender against this
act is committed
to the House of Correction
untill the next General or Quarter
Sessions, and the

such person a rogue
and vagabond . . they

to be kept in the said
House of Corrections to
hard labour for any farther time not exceeding
six months

By §4. All persons

been punished
as rogues and vagabonds

deemed incorrigible
rouges.
