From that period the infection extended itself almost
through the whole ship. The Chief male died.
The Ship is now made more roomy by the
second deck.
In March of April 1777, I was called upon to
provide another Ship of the same Tonnage. I
provided a ship for People mostly from Assizes.
I put one of my own Jamaica Ships there
of about 260 Tons, as I could find none in the River
fit for the service.
I found a man of war that Government had
a thought of parting with and in June I applied
to the Secretary of State for his assistance to obtain
that ship in order that I might have her
ready before the Hot weather which was then approaching.
I bought that Ship: her Tonnage was
731 Tons.
I fitted her up, and was assisted by Mr Banks
and Mr Solander in forming the Hospital. They
They advised me to provide Hammocks, which
I did and had the Convicts put into them. I
soon found the Hammocks did not answer: they
were too hot, although each man had a Hammock
to himself.
In the meantime I was preparing the Platforms.
I took down the Hammocks. I tried them about
a month: the men grew more sickly in them.
I think they are not so good for the prisoners: they
did not like them themselves. The men found them inconvenient
on account of their chains.
