In October last I adopted the plan of Straw Beds
instead of Mats, 6 feet long and 4 wide, which
is for two men & every two men have a blanket
to cover them. The Blankets
The Blankets are aired frequently.
I have received in the whole 632 Prisoners
176 thereof have died viz from August 1776
to 21 April 1777 34
From 21 April to 30 May 13.
From 30 May to 27 October 79.
From 27 October to 19 Jany 1778 35
From 19 Jany. to 26 March 15.
On th an American voyage in the Transport service
I have had a ship with 150 People in her
and have lost but about 5 or 6: and I remember
one ship that lost 50 or 60 out of the same
number.
It is considered upon an average that 10 is a
moderate loss out of 100
Upon an average 7 years our loss will be in
Gaol and on board one 7th.
I have 3 Contracts – one for 120 Convicts: to find
Ships Lighters and every other expence (except that
of Surgeons) for 3 years at £560 p annum,
another 130 convicts Ships &c to be found for
2 years at £3483-7-6 pr annum.
Another in Jany. last to July 1779 at the same
rate as the last for 130 convicts.
