At first I ordered the Convicts 5. pounds of Biscuit
to a mess of 6 people; half an Ox-cheek, and
3 pints of Pease made into Soup for a days
allowance (as in the Navy)

Three Days in the week they have Burgoe,
which is 3 pints of Oatmeal made into Porridge
besides 5 lb of Bread and 2 lb of Cheese.

Upon observing in Mr Howard's publication
complaints about the biscuits, I found some
of the Biscuit had been damaged: then I changed
the Biscuit into Bread made of the 2d Flour.

I then gave 4 1/2 lbs of that instead of 5 lb of
Biscuit, and I substituted Rice in the room of
Pease. This change was made in Novr or Decr
1776

In Spring 1777 I alter'd the Bread to 5 lb,
as I thought 4 1/2 lb too little

I got my first plan from the allowance in
work-houses – which is about 15 oz.

The 5 lb of Bread was continued till Jany
1778. I think this allowance is sufficient

I likewise gave them a quart of Beer Small
Beer 4 days in the week, the other days they have
water.

I was afraid of the Water at Woolwich: but I
found the Navy filled there.

In summer I adopted a Filling store,
which is filled 4 or 5 days before the water is drunk.
it is fine water: I drink it in my own family.
