The behaviour of the Convicts is good beyond what
can be expected: they go to their labour with cheerfulness
– I thought
I thought those pardoned were intitled to the
Bounty, & I gave it them – I thought I was
wrong and I asked if the Law entitled them
to it, and was told by the Judge they were not,
unless recommended by the Court of King's Bench.
The Court recommended the other method of
getting pardons by the Secretary of State.
Those Prisoners that came since the
first have not been so depressed, they look
forward in hopes of recommendation of pardon.
Very few have behaved ill: those that have, have
been punished with a Cat of 9 tails: I have very
seldom been obliged to use punishment.
Some desperate men for conspiracy, who
threatened to kill their keeper were put in heavy
irons for a week or fortnight – I think some
means might be used to keep the dregs from
mixing with the men.
Have you a Chaplain?
We have a voluntary assistance of a Clergyman
who came often, but had left it off
for some time, but he begins to come again.
We have no provision for a Clergyman – He
left good books among the Convicts.
