I have been employ'd in transporting
men many years. I had £5 a man. The
£5 was for nourishing them and their conveyance.
I carried them to Virginia and Maryland:
those were the only places I could contract to carry
them to. I enquired about the Floridas and
was told they could not take one ship's load. I
don't know the Floridas.
Transported Felons are employ'd in Maryland
in manual labour.
I have been in Virginia and Maryland
and have heard that Robberies have lately been
committed by Felons sent there, but they did not
rob in those colonies, but in the neighbouring ones.
To send Felons to Florida the expence
would be so great I would not contract to carry them
there.
In the West India Islands there is a Law
to prohibit taking Transports: they are obliged
to keep a proportion of whites to the Blacks, &
convicts are not considered among the Whites.
I have heard of great losses — of deaths in
Families in Virginia and Maryland, which are imputed
to the infection received from the Convicts.
The Navigation to St Augustine & Pensacola is
more difficult than to America, especially for a ship of any size.
