I have visited the vessels twice: the first
time on a Sunday Oct. 1776. on board the Justitia.
I went on a Sunday because I should have
a view of the Convicts. They I saw there altogether
upon deck. I took two walks round them, and
looked in the face of every individual person.
I soon saw by their sickly looks that some
mismanagement was among them. Many had
no shirts; some no waistcoats: some no stockings
some no shoes: some many know me; some one of which
I saw were very ill.
I touched his pulse: I asked him how
he did. He said he was ready to sink into
the earth: I immediately turned to my conductor:
& he immediately swore an oath and said, the
man had the Pox. (My conductor was an Inspector
of the Convicts one of the head officers
I suppose) I then said, some care ought to
be taken of the man. The conductor said
he had a draught yesterday. I asked the
man if he had had it: & he said, no.
I turned to the Conductor, and he said nothing.
I found afterwards, by inquiry that no care had
been taken of the man. I asked the Conductor
how he could tell me such a falsity. He
said nothing.
I saw many others that looked sickly. I
inquired whether they had any medical assistance:
