and asked him if he would then say that biscuit
was not mouldy. He said they had but little of
it left and it would soon be out.
They had no bedding in Octr. 1776.
No mat: they lay upon the boards: no straw.
I saw them in the noon of a Sunday
in Octr. 1776. I went into every part of the
Justitia when they lay. They had nailed up
a few boards to separate the well from the sick.
The sick were laying upon the boards. The
Justitia I should think had then been established
3 or 4 months.
I observed a disagreeable smell like the
smell of a Jail. I am persuaded had not Parliament
turned their attention to the Gaols instead
of 1/3 or 1/4 being lost all would have been lost
on board the Justitia. I
I saw a number of Ox cheeks undressed:
they seemed to be seconds. I was informed
they had nothing but water to drink at that
time. Many of them made complaints to me
at that time of their victuals being much tainted.
They made their complaints in a sort
of soft tone.
I had so lately visited the Jails that I
am clear they had no Jail-distemper when
they came.
There is no divine service – I saw no
Religious books among them.
Their behaviour seemed quite orderly.
