was not their Beer day.
Some of the Convicts told me they were better
used than when I was there before – the Prisoners told
me an Apothecary came about every other day – they
had then none of them the Itch – I went to see the
Apothecary but did not meet with him.
There seemed no Uniform Plan with Regard
to their Cloathing. I perceived some had no Shirts
others looked as if they not had been not been washed
for many Weeks – some lookt tight – some had
Shoes & some had none, or such as they could
not possibly work in.
In enquired if there were any Tables or Rules about
ther their Food or Conduct & there were none.
I went down & found that they had a Mat to
lie on & a Rug (that would cover about two) to
cover them – they had nothing under them but a
Mat.
I enquired if there was a Chaplain & they said there
was not, that there was one of Lady Huntingdons who
came occasionally but had not been there some time
on Account of the Badness of the Weather.
They have no regular Plan with regard to their
working – some in the Warren were working at
barrowing some drawing Carts & others filling – I
should conjecture they did about 1/3d of voluntary
Labour – that three Men did about as much as One
Man might do that was hired to work. I took the
time & the Nature of the Work together – the Captain
& two or three Overseers inspected their Labour – they
were not, strict if it had been properly overlooked
