on Board very few were sick & none dead. I found
they had received the Country Convicts & two or
three were sick on their Arrival. I ordered them into
the Hospital & soon after a Putred Fever broken out – a
great many fell sick I cant recollect the Number I
report once to Month to Mr. Campbell, I reported
several sick & some dead – the Disorder lasted some
Months before we could get rid of it. The greatest
Number in the Hospitals was not above 16 with the
Fever. The Coroner did not attend the Dead at first.
When I first went on board there was but one
Ship, when two there were two Hospitals. One
Man that attended the Hospital caught the Distemper
& died.
We have got commodious Hospitals but if the Sick
were separated form the Well it might be better.
I are paid by Mr. Campbell for any Trouble.
We decrease in Number of Sick the increase in
Number of Prisoners – there are 9 sick now.
The Convicts have clean Shirts every Sunday, &
washed every Morning (those that are well enough).
We oblige them to be washed.
Mr. Campbell provides them Cloaths – their
Shirts are white & not check. We take their
Cloaths off when they first come & throw them
overboard, & provide them with new.
The Nine sick are ill with a Putrid Fever.
Those 9 who came from York four of which soon
died. One from Gloucester & One from Tothills Fields
Bridewell who had all the Goal Distemper upon
them. That those from Newgate 20 out of 40 –
have the Venereal Complaint but none the Goal
Distemper.
The sick People are allowed Rice Gruel Balm
