Tea & a little Wine if necessary – they have every
thing necessary. Every thing I recommend Mr. Campbell orders.

There are Port Holes in the Vessells. I have been
there many times in a Morning when the
Convicts got up, & smelt no ill smell.

The Beds are 6 feet long & 4 Wide – the Sick lie
by themselves – the Decks are scoured.

About 9 have died within the last Two Months

Mr. Thomas Powrey

I am Clerk of the Works to the Board of
Ordnance – the Convicts work under my
Direction. My first Orders from that Board
were the 20th Jany. 1777 – the Captain orders the
Convicts out & I superintend them from 50 to
200 in Number. I have a Plan of the Work
done by them (delivers it in to the Comittee) I
compute the Value of the Work done by the
Convicts at £3350.

In general the Convicts perform their Work
chearfully – they have a Pint of Small Beer
allowed them by Lord Townsend, by the
Application of Mr. Campbell.

I think the Convicts do as much Work as
Men employed upon the Highways, & as the
Common Labourers do employed in scaffolding.

We allow them two Hours at their Dinner
