and observe at the same time the temperature
of the air and of the water on the outside.
Be aware of the influence which the vapour
arising from the water when heated may
have on the result of the experiment – Heat
the air ver within the receiver either by applying
the flame of a lamp to the bottom of the vessel in
which it is immersed or by blacking a part
of the receiving in the inside and throwing the
rays of the sun on it by a burning, glass, or
by burning substances in it: or rather by
inverting the receiver over a red hot iron, drawing
a part of the air out suddenly by a syphon
in order tolet in the desired quantity of water,
then observe the quantity expelled by the gradual
heating of the air, and readmitted by
its cooling.
Try this same experiment on mercury
instead of water.
