These distinctions I hence selected as the
most substantial that could be devised
and pertinent which it would be possible to devise.
They are at any rate a little more so
than those with of which the penal system in
this country is principally composed: distinctions
according to which life or death turns between
upon the differences of a farthings worth of real or
fictitious value: upon the difference often indiscernible
between a warehouse and a dwelling-house:
upon the difference betwixt brass and
bell metal: between a turnip and a cabbage
between a plant attached to and the same plant
attached from to and detached from the soil which
gave it birth. Such are the distinctions which
in the age we live in are looked up to with
reverence: but which in an age a little more
enlightened will be ranked with the substantive
forms and quiddities of the schools.
