to do and a little less. For as to his choosing
rather to be starved than to do what it would
be evident to every man that any man has it
in his power to do, it is not to be supposed.
If a man chooses to starve it is his own choice
and his own fault. If a man by threatening
chooses really to starve you can not hinder him.
If a man by threatening to starve himself had
it in his power to example himself to exempt
himself from any obligation whatsoever he thought proper
instead of being a prisoner he would be master
of the prison.
In such a situation, not having it
in his power to procure any idle amusement
the probability is that⊞ ⊞ a every prisoner would perform a quantity of work equal in quantity at least to the least task commonly performed by men at large after the same degree of practice: and with the help of a
small proportional reward for whatever was done over and
above the tasks, equal in value as well as
quantity: and that cheerfulness and that
many could perform it cheerfully, and some
to a value exceeding that mark.
