is closed – How when it is open? – The firmament
is their ceiling then.
Observe the effect of so simple a contrivance.
One point of f economy opens lets in the door to another.
By throwing out the stories of intermediate area,
we are enabled with the more perfect security to
lower the ceilings of the Cells. And in what
possible respect to do we lose by it? Could I have get
it for nothing I would not have an inch more.
Look at the Wymondham Brideswell: the Galways
& Ten foot is the height of the Ceilings there: one
quarter of the height more than mine. On this
head alone the difference of expence is one fifth
saved in the one plan, one fourth unnecessarily expended
in the other.
Airiness in the Panopticon plan receives is assisted
by help from another circumstance. Windows coming low,
and two to a cell, and those 4 foot wide each, in short as wide as possible. They
are glazed indeed: that is they are capable of being
shut when the opening of them would be of no use. useless or inconvenient.
But they open in every part: so that whenever
air is wanted, they give it to within three foot
of the floor.
