Another objection made to me has been a
want of extensibility supposed to be inseparable
from this construction. When you have got your
Panopticon built, supposing suppose more
prisoners brought you than it will hold, what
will you do then? Long piles of building
admitt of being lengthened: but how will
you lengthen or enlarge a round one?
At this time the plan of its objections
that have prevailed against the plan of absolute utter
solitude had not presented themselves: the force
of the objection with a view to the justice of it the objection
is therefore to be reckoned according to what it
was at the time of its being produced. It can
have no other measure, should the objections which
have prevailed with one against the plan of ab
utter solitude in spite of the arguments here produced
against it be pronounced by authority
