Conclusion
not
too eligible
It may be said Thus secured in the enjoyment of
the necessaries of life their condition, it may be said, will be better than
that of many of the and industrious Poor
— No it will not. Our bless comfort blessing yet is wanting without
which all comforts lose their relish — liberty. But
even should they really be so, it would be so much
the better; the end among the ends of punishment is not vengeance.
The material thing is they well not seem so: they
will not seem so at the sort of distance in which their salvation
will be viewed — Should I like to be in their
case? what man at liberty could answer otherwise in the
affirmative than in the negative. They are in health. They suffer neither hunger
thirst nor cold: true: but not a moment of their time
is at their own disposal, but they are not masters of
a moment of their own time: what they do is for their
ultimate good: true: but in the mean time they do
nothing as they please. They are not worn down by excessive
labours: true: but except what is absolutely necessary
for meals and sleep there is not a moment of their time
at during which they are not if either at work or under
discipline. Alternation of work and lettering & intellectual instruction,
diversification of both, this is what to them stands instead is to perform
the office of of relaxation. At a periods of life more of less
advanced
They work, & what
they do is more for
others than for themselves.
