to lavish on the Country, leads many to apprehend Year
that his account to Ministry will be more flattering and,
favourable than the subject Merits, or candour directs. —
However a short time must open their eyes and I am persuaded
they would hereafter rejoice had they been fortunate enough
to give up the business in the present state. I make no doubt
you will hear a good deal said in favour of New Norfolk, if
you give credit to one half be assured it will be as much as
you ought, this little Island which is only fifteen miles in
circumference, is certainly a better soil and much more
fertile than this vile place; but its difficulty of access and
there not being a place round it where a vessell can Anchor
in any kind of safety will ever make it a place of very
little import. The Pine on it is good but it is with
great difficulty and risk any can be got off through the surf
which runs dangerously high and breaks with great violence
it produces a species of Judis Palustus Lutei which
might prove useful in making Hemp, Cordage &c. was
the Island in any other quarter of the Globe and easy of
access — besides the Pine and Hemp (of which you may see
a small quantity by calling on Messers Wilson & Hodgkinson
of Snow Hill) it produces tho' not in great abundance, a
kind of pepper much resembling the long pepper. The
plantain tree has been discovered growing wild there, but
nothing of the kind in this place, or any thing else that
in case of necessity would prove a succeedaneum for
bread — While I remain in this Country which I most
credently hope will not be long, I shall feel a great pleasure
in executing any thing I can for you, in the interim
believe me to be —

Sir,
Your most obedt: & verytible Servt
John White

P.S — I have tried the Melon seed: which I was favoured by you — they all came up but like every other thing in this Country has —
