Panopticon Construction
Wanted – a
conjectural estimate
of the expence
of a Penitentiary
Panopticon
according
to the Plan contained represented
in Plates
II & III and
described in the
book.
N.B. The expence
of the Dead
part may be
taken in the lump
without regard
to the particular
mode in which
it will be laid
out, and upon
the supposition
that so much
as is without
the circle will
be laid out and
be to fitted up
in the state of
an ordinary
house together
with such part
of the what is
within the circle
as it not occupied
by the Inspection
Galleries
---page break---
Galleries, Diametrical
passage
Chapel Galleries
and passages
to the Chapel
Galleries.
N.B. It is supposed
that so
much of the
the circuit of
the Chapel Galleries
as in between
corresponds to
and runs within
the Dead Part
might instead
of being in two
Galleries be disposed
in one
with the steps
to the height of
the highest row
in the upper
Gallery, or higher:
in which supposition
it might
occasionally answer
the purpose
of an Orchestra.
This part being
behind the french
or Minister
would not do well
for company, if
continued on in
the form of an Upper
and Lower Gallery
---page break---
Quere would
the building hold
together and be
strong enough
if the circuit
of the arches
were interrupted
in the Dead
Part, with or without
something equivalent
to the
Arches in that
part? If any
such equivalent were
necessary, could
it be inserted
without interfering
with the
passages and other
communications
between the Projecting
Front and
the Dead part
of the circuit?
