My endeavour is throughout to place in the
strongest point point of view every imperfection I conceive
myself to have discovered in whatever plan strikes
me as susceptible of improvement: that thus what
is bad or less good may all along be rejected
and what is better and if possible what is best
established in its place. Thus I have dealt all
along by my own original first conceptions: presenting scrutinizing
them without mercy, the instant that any thing
that seemed promised better presented itself to my views.

The same measure I hope have dealth without
scruple to the conceptions of others those public spirited gentlemen whose beneficence and
industry and magnanimity has trodden in same
paths has been divested to the same object.

If I have treated with greater severity what
seemed to me their errors than what I was
satisfied were my own, if I have dwelt, as
most certainly I have done with much greater energy
on the former than on the latter, why have I
done so what has been the reason of this difference?
What, but that in the first case I
found myself, in the situation of an adverse
advocate
