Escapes
Shall his attempt be in the rear? In the
front rear he finds the grating which in that quarter
bounds his Cell. The grating has a door: that door
a lock: locks may be picked. Some however, it is
said can not: but if they could what has he to pick
them with? Pick-lock instruments are still more
difficult to secrete than spring saws or phials of
aqua fortis: Here too run the same human obstacles as before:
keepers ears and eyes, and fellow- prisoner's tongues. But
the former oppose a triple force: the windows of the
Cell are perfectly seen only from one story of the
Inspection-Tower: the back grating from all three.
But doors may be left unlocked: though it is not
very natural or very frequent for them to be so in a
prison. Suppose this improbable good fortune to have happened
to him: how shall be avail himself of it?
Shall he clamber down into the intermediate
area? It may be rendered more or less difficult: but
at any rate it is not impossible. Let him have
succeeded. Shall he attempt the rear? That course shall
be considered presently. What does he find in front?
